In a visit a couple of years back to the sculpture garden at Storm King, I was intrigued by an enormous box-like structure constructed of welded Corten steel. The top front of the box had a flap that hung down and partially obscured whatever was inside the structure. I found it to be fascinating… the depth and partial blocking of vision provided an additional layer of interest for me, and I sought to include some aspect of that in a couple of paintings, including this one.  An abundance of Amazon shipping boxes now became a semi-permanent fixture in my small studio… different shapes and sizes, allowing me to introduce a different kind of depth and color to my work than I had previously entertained.

An informal workbench that my father had welded together 60 or so years ago became the staging area, and allowed me to frame my assorted a bit differently than in previous work. Augmenting my unusual assortment of industrial items with colorful tin toys, croquet and billiard balls and balloons has continued to provide me with an endless source of inspiration. The red floodlight completely changes the character of both the backdrop and the individual objects. Completed in 2021, this piece is oil on paper, 22"h x 30"w image; matted and framed at 37"h x 44"w.
