My studio is in the unfinished basement of a house that’s been in my family for more than 100 years. The main portion of the house dates back to the 1780s, while other parts were added-on (or torn down) over the years. While much of the foundation is rubble, this wall — a later addition – is brick, albeit brick that was laid somewhat haphazardly. I love the imperfect pattern that it creates, and it features prominently as a backdrop for many of my paintings.

When I’m starting a painting, I look at the color of the various components and imagine how they can be placed within the composition to create interest and drama. The use of suspended objects adds visual interest and depth. I’m also interested in how different lighting approaches can heighten the visual experience. For example, the use of a red floodlight in this arrangement dramatically alters the color and character of the individual objects while contributing to the illusion of depth, creating a more engaging visual experience for the viewer. Completed in 2022, this piece is oil on cradled wood panel, 30"h X 40"w, and is framed.
