The Work Party: Yellow Biplane and Blue Truck in Green
Oil on canvas, 2022; 24"h x 48"w, framed
Price: $4500 USD
My studio is in the unfinished basement of a house that’s been in my family for more than 100 years. The main portion of the house dates back to the 1780s, while other parts were added-on (or torn down) over the years. While much of the foundation is rubble, this wall — a later addition – is brick, albeit brick that was laid somewhat haphazardly. I love the imperfect pattern that it creates, and it features prominently as a backdrop for many of my paintings.
When I’m starting a painting, I always look at the color of the various components and imagine how they can be placed within the composition to create interest and drama. I’m also interested in how different lighting approaches can heighten the visual experience. For example, the use of a green floodlight in this arrangement dramatically changes the character of the individual objects, creating a more engaging visual experience for the viewer. This piece includes some of my favorite antique toys, along with the orange extension cord that has wormed its way into several pieces. The addition of suspended balloons, light bulbs and the biplane help create visual interest around the composition, and add to the illusion of depth. Completed in 2022, this piece is oil on canvas, 24″h X 48″w, and is framed.
